When Tinker Taylor offered me some work on a freelance basis this February, I never thought that three months down the line I’d be sitting at my desk writing a blog for the website. But here I am and so, without further ado, let me tell you what I’ve been up to since joining the team…

If you receive an email from me, the signature will tell you that I’m a Researcher. This title encompasses much of what I’ve done, such as contacting and conversing with potential interviewees for short films, sourcing archive footage and images, scouting out possible filming locations and even scheduling a studio shoot. One of the best things about working at an independent production company, however, is that no role is set in stone. There have been opportunities to proofread website content, to assist on shoots and to sync sound in post-production, something I’d never done before but found rather engaging (though I’m sure many would disagree!). I’ve also travelled around the country and balanced masterfully on a metal box to ask questions from behind the camera – you have to do something to get a level eye line when you’re only five foot tall! No two days have been the same since I entered the Tinker Taylor studio and although it’s been an incredibly busy few weeks, it’s been fantastic to work on such a wide range of projects and develop new skills along the way.

It’s strange to look back on my first day, when I was ridiculously apprehensive about phoning local studios to enquire about their facilities and availability. Now it seems perfectly normal to dial a number and talk to strangers, whether it’s arranging an interview by liaising with the PA to a chief executive, or chatting to a retired police officer about their experiences of policing public disorder in the 1980s. A confident telephone manner really is essential and I’d like to think that I’ve become quite proficient at making calls of all kinds in the last twelve weeks. My tea and coffee making skills have also been well-deployed and I’m pretty sure I have everyone in the studio’s order locked down now.

Of course, it’s been a steep learning curve, as this is Tinker Taylor’s busiest time of year. The Police Federation of England and Wales Conference takes place next week and in addition to producing lots of beautifully shot, perfectly pitched videos and infographics for several of the sessions, TT have been working closely with other clients, including Catalyst Corporate Finance and Marie Curie Cancer Care, to deliver great content for their websites. Three months have gone in a flash and as I finish this blog, I’m wondering whether there are actually any teabags left in the cupboard to see us through the next quarter…

Shot 1080p.
Dur. 8 min 15

The Defence Police Federation, which represents officers of the Ministry of Defence Police, has launched a new video to highlight the role played by its members and warned that planned cuts to the MOD Police could cost the Ministry of Defence billions of pounds a year.

In its new video, In Defence of the Nation, the Federation has claimed that planned MOD cuts will reduce the size of the MOD’s CID complement by up to 90 percent, eliminating the Department’s dedicated investigative capacity and ensuring countless frauds and thefts from the MOD go undetected. Citing research by the National Fraud Authority that most organisations lose between one and ten percent of their revenue each year, the Federation has suggested the MOD could left out of pocket by as much as £2 billion a year without a dedicated capacity to investigate theft and fraud.

In Defence of the Nation highlights the various roles of MOD Police officers including the provision of dedicated community policing for service families, security of vital defence infrastructure, and the MOD Police’s role as an “essential cog in the wheel of Britain’s counter-terrorist operations”. The MOD Police is set to have its budget almost halved following decisions made by Ministers before Christmas.

The Federation has claimed the cuts could reduce the number of MOD Police officers to 2,100 in 2013 – down from more than 3,500 in 2009. It also anticipates its community policing presence will be eliminated, leaving the support of service families to Home Office constabularies who are themselves facing significant cuts.

Eamon Keating, National Chairman of the Defence Police Federation, said:
“We created this video as it is important for the public to understand what our members do, and how their security and that of critical assets will be affected if our officers are no longer there.

“We all know and appreciate that the MOD has to make savings, but drastic cuts to its dedicated civilian police force make no sense and will ultimately cost far more money than they save, as a huge number of crimes will simply go undetected with no dedicated team to investigate them.

This past month Tinker Taylor have been putting together a couple of promos for the product launch of The Timecode Buddy System, an ‘all in one’ timecode solution incorporating the best features of existing quality products with enhancements enabled by WiFi and iOS capabilities.

The duo of Timecode products and a free iOS app are essential items for television and sound professionals looking to upgrade their kit.

The main promo combined engaging motion graphics with Timecode Systems founder Paul Scurrell talking candidly to camera about the inspiration behind, and process of creating Timecode Buddy.

The motion graphics, while created in a variety of programs (Cinema 4D, Motion 5 and After Effects), all seamlessly flow together to simply yet elegantly convey the technology within Timecode Buddy, the ease at which you can use the system and the unique design and functionality aspects of the products and app.

Take a look at the product tease that we released this week.

Restorative processes bring those harmed by crime or conflict, and those responsible for the harm, into communication, enabling everyone affected by a particular incident to play a part in repairing the harm and finding a positive way forward. This video looks at the how the thoughtless actions of a group of local teenagers affected a small community and how the restorative process had a positive effect for both sides.
