Our Work: Shifting to the Digital Platform

Reaching Customers During Lockdown

Lockdown and social distancing measures have caused a fundamental shift in the way almost all of our clients do business. For many of the manufacturers and retailers we work with, it has meant they are unable to rely on their shops and showrooms to make sales. We have been working with these companies to make the shift to digital marketing, through high-quality, professional product videos.

Luckily, promotional content isn’t anything new to us at Tinker Taylor: we’ve been working with manufacturers and retailers for years, producing successful television, cinema and digital ads to promote their products. An example is Yale, for whom we have produced films in over 20 different languages.

One of our most exciting collaborations with Yale was a series of very successful 10-second YouTube pre-roller ads promoting their bike locks – and not least because there was a live, on-brand yellow python involved! As the brief was to create a scene that could be set anywhere in Europe, the surroundings of our centrally located headquarters in Digbeth proved the perfect backdrop for these humorous shorts.

We employed a very different approach for our series of television idents produced for builders’ warehouse Selco. These short clips appeared before, during and after Sky Sports’ Sunday Supplement and during the ITV News regional sports reports, further enhancing Selco’s already established brand as a trusted partner to the construction industry.

We shot the films in the state-of-the-art green screen studio at Parkside Mediahouse, which is part of Birmingham City University and only a short walk away from our own studio. Using the green screen technology at the studio as well as broadcast-quality camera equipment, we created the unique look of the idents that fits the Selco brand so well.

During lockdown, we have been able to put the experience gained during projects like the Yale and Selco films to good use, for example in our recent product films for electric fireplace retailer Flamerite Fires. With a socially distanced crew using the latest in static and mobile camera technology, we shot a series of beautiful promotional films, edited and colour graded by our in-house team. By distributing these films on their website and social channels during lockdown Flamerite can still show potential customers what their products might look like in their living rooms, even when their showrooms are closed.

With the restrictions imposed by local and national lockdown, this period has been an opportunity for us to continue exploring the best ways to deliver high-quality content, on brief and on budget, within our rigorous safety measures, which are explained in this short animation. We were approached by long-standing client, BES, to produce a series of Google ads, showcasing their wide variety of products for the heating, plumbing and gas trades. With a series of short, comedic scripts, a cast of talented actors (including some of their own employees!) and access to the large BES warehouse for the filming day, these films showcase the quality of BES’ offering as well as their humour. Through these ads, BES will be able to continue promoting their products even though their customers are now shopping online rather than in person.
